What is Mastering?

Mastering is part art, and part science. Part the integrity of the signal path, and part the person that is manipulating that signal.

Most of the people we talk to have various overlapping ideas about what mastering is and most of those ideas are right. But most are singularly focused on one aspect or another.

In it's basic structure, mastering is three things:

1. Making final creative adjustments to the sound of a collection of music for the purpose of eventually being delivered on a specific medium.
2. Creatively laying out the arrangement of that collection of music in accordance with its intended delivery medium.
3. Creating a master copy of utmost integrity, from which that final delivery medium will be derived.

We believe, that at its best, mastering could be likened to standing in front of a foggy mirror. If you could grab a dry towel and wipe the fog away, you would see all of the detail that was once somewhat masked and blurry. You didn’t have to change the composition of the person standing there, and you didn’t have to change the composition of the mirror, you just had to let the person’s reflection be accurately represented.

There are times when there is very little fog if any at all, and there are times it is hard to tell what is being reflected in that mirror, but either way, the goal is to stay true to that person that is the source of the reflection.

Every record is unique and created under unique circumstances. Please just give us a call to discuss your project.

We are happy to spend the time speaking with anyone interested in the mastering process to discuss techniques, pricing, and what to expect from the results. If you contact us during the mixing process we can also guide you in avoiding some common pitfalls that will detract from your final master.
